Babe Rainbow from Byron Bay, Australia, return to the blog with “Mangoes,” a slice of summer-soaked psychedelia.
“Mangoes” is an interesting track that sidesteps conventional songcraft… something I always love to hear in the psych music. It favours texture, movement and rhythmic freedom over obvious hooks. The result feels like krautrock crossed with “Going Up the Country” by Canned Heat, with traces of Angine de Poitrine also present as mood and atmosphere are embraced above all else.
“Mangoes” is sun-drenched and woozy, drifting from loose lo-fi textures into improvisational acoustic passages that sway around you. Buttery basslines playfully weave beneath, while the steady motorik drumbeat drives everything relentlessly forward, creating a feeling that you are lost in a stream-of-consciousness or vivid daydream.
The vocals are charmingly hazy, from the airy harmonies to the spoken-word passages, while subtle bursts of synth vocal effects add a modern psychedelic sparkle reminiscent of Black Moth Super Rainbow… without this the track could otherwise pass as a long-lost composition from the late 1960s.
Lyrically, “Mangoes” explores the feeling of being lost in the world while sensing a connection to something greater through love and shared human experience. It doesn’t try to answer life’s mysteries but instead finds comfort in uncertainty.
