Evelyn Cools - “Coasting”

Arizona-based singer-songwriter Evelyn Cools finds herself back on the blog with the dreamy and delightful pop sounds of “Coasting.”

The title of the song itself is a direct indication that listeners are about to get an earful of a gentle production, perfect for a “hazy summer day cruising along the endless shoreline,” which just so happens to be Cools’ inspiration for penning the track. The first sounds that enter your ears are on the lo-fi end of the pop spectrum, consisting of some sweet strums of an electric guitar atop a somewhat subdued beat. The notes from an organ swell in the background and it is not long before “Coasting” elevates into a robust production.

No more than ten seconds into the song, a synth provides an ear-worm melody and we wager that this will be what leads most listeners to promptly adding the track to their summer playlists. And, of course, if that is not enough, just wait until Cools’ lovely voice appears and seals the deal. Her vocal delivery consists of everything we’ve come to love about the dream pop genre, and she is quickly becoming one of our favorite finds for 2023.

Coasting” has just the right amount of ‘80s pop music inspiration to make all who hear it nostalgic for music from that era, but rest assured that it still holds up to the standards set forth by modern artists, such as The Lagoons and Lana Del Rey. The layers of vocals on the chorus will draw you right in and the joyful rhythm provided by the bass and drums will have you tapping your feet for the rest of the summer.

You can catch “Coasting” and many other sunny vibes in our Sounds of Summer playlist.
