Escape Artist Lovers - “Hey Motherf*cker”

California-based rock duo Escape Artist Lovers have just released “Hey Motherf*cker,” a melodic lullaby that devolves into a fuzzed-out rocker. The track is a classic love song with an edge and a gorgeous slice of garage rock with a dash of psychedelia.

This stripped-back song is built around a playful and childlike melody on the xylophone, which is enhanced by fingerpicked acoustic guitar. Both instruments conjure up an impression of a lovely lullaby, evoking feelings of tenderness and purity. A shaker is added to give a satisfying sense of movement and dynamics. An element of late 1960s nostalgia is added via the cello, which is evocative of The Rolling Stones’ “Ruby Tuesday,” as the cello foreshadows the trippy tones that are about to come.

The highlight of the song occurs when a fuzzy guitar solo takes centre stage, contrasting gorgeously with the elegance of the cello. The inclusion of a big, reverberated kick drum gives the music depth, but also enhances the twisted atmosphere provided by the lyrics. The song then returns back to the stripped-back tones, which gives a pleasant cyclical form and charm, enhancing the lullaby-like structure.

The interaction and harmonies between the male and female vocals radiate an alluring chemistry, but also, again, contrast pleasingly with the melodies. The band says: “It’s a classic boy/girl love song. If cupid had a switchblade instead of an arrow. Love… like chewing on a bumblebee.”

The song, “Hey Motherf*cker,” by Escape Artist Lovers, is an absolutely charming and playful garage rock song… It fuses the innocence of childlike lullabies and songs about love, resulting in something really gritty and unhinged. This short, mischievous song will leave you wanting more.
