Toronto-based singer-songwriter Emma Campbell has just released the vulnerably moody sounds of “Lights Go Out,” a track that rides the waves of human desire.

Lights Go Out” first enters your ears with a raw and intimate acoustic guitar performance, delicately finger-plucked as though it is being performed right in front of you. Campbell’s voice arrives, ever-so-slightly reminiscent of Lizzy McAlpine , Rosa Linn, and Phoebe Bridgers, instantly enchanting and inviting the listener into the tune.

The refrain is comprised of some lyrical lines that are bound to resonate with those who have ever done something for the wrong reason– or with the wrong person. The words are full of a magnificent charge of introspection, coming across as though Campbell trusts us completely and, in return, we trust her just the same.

As the track progresses, the production expands, first with a string arrangement, then some bass, and then the glorious sounds of additional vocal layers, which widen the heighten to a heavenly and dreamlike level. The heartbeat of a distant kick drum emerges, providing some forward momentum as “Lights Go Out” reaches the peak of its crescendo.

Campbell has provided a work of art that is fueled by a raw and honest sense of longing and we hope that “Lights Go Out” is indicative of more new music on the way. In the meantime, stream this one to your heart’s content, and feel free to explore her back catalogue where you will find gems like the acoustically-driven “What I Need.”

What I Need” comes complete with an upbeat rhythm that appears to have been designed for driving around with the windows down, regardless of the weather. Believe us when we tell you that it has been carefully crafted, with meticulous layers of vocals and a robust arrangement that will fuel you on your quest for closure. Campbell’s sound is ready for the radio, while also being imbued with a level of intimacy that will make you glad that you pressed the play button.
