Elissa Mielke – “Lemon Tree”

Strabane, Ontario-based singer-songwriter Elissa Mielke arrives with “Lemon Tree,” a raw and vulnerable glimpse into acceptance.

This track is a quiet and gentle beast, slowly easing itself into your life with a subtle pulse that supports some otherworldly tones of pedal steel. And whether it’s a Rhodes, effected guitar, or something else entirely, the ethereal blend casts a dreamlike canopy across the soundscape. Barebones percussion and deep bass notes provide a heartbeat to the agony of being left to wonder why a relationship has met its demise.

This is the first we’re hearing from Mielke, but her vocal performance in “Lemon Tree” is so incredibly vulnerable that there are times when her voice is barely above a whisper. It is not at all difficult to sense the desperation in trying to distinguish between accepting that a relationship has ended and accepting that we may never know exactly why.

“Lemon Tree” is the kind of song you play when nothing else seems to make sense. It echoes the human need for answers and resolution, but it also helps to ease the pain when you’ve run out of solutions.
