Cult Caves - “Entropy”

Brimming full of intertwining melodies and textures, USA-based Cult Caves have just released the gorgeous dream pop song “Entropy.”

The song is pushed along by a carefree, slow-paced electric drum machine groove. A mellow acoustic guitar strums hypnotically, as soft synth melodically fleshes out the song’s warm atmosphere. A wonderful highlight is the attention to detail within the song’s textures. Clean, electric guitar jangles, giving brighter tones and width in one area, whilst, as the chorus sections develop, darker, backwards synth layers lend contrast and depth.

The hypnotic, arpeggiating synths during the song’s dynamic break bring psychedelic undertones. The transition of the synths into swelling trumpet notes heightens this mood and I really like the confident experimentalism displayed by Cult Caves in these areas. As the song draws to a close, all the textures that have been beautifully displayed come together, building up to a joyful and satisfying crescendo.

The expressive yet gentle vocals are coated in a nice serving of delay, providing a great sense of depth and dreaminess to the lyrics. The performance strikes me as a classic “pop” performance from the early 1970s. Lyrically, “Entropy” explores the complexities of growing old, falling in love, and mortality.

Cult Caves‘ “Entropy” is a wonderfully constructed dream pop song full of textures, tones, and experimentation. You will get lost in its sound as it guides you through the existential parts of the human condition.
