Shayne Cook - “Miles Away”

Brisbane-bred and Melbourne-based songwriter Shayne Cook must have heard about our preference for dark and moody music because here he is with his latest track, “Miles Away.”

Miles Away” is rich in vibe, opening with a riffing duet between piano and guitar, and Cook’s deep, Nick Cave-esque vocals lending to a somewhat ominous atmosphere. A synth pad in the distance is also a leading contributor to this sensation and the listener cannot help but imagine this song as the soundtrack to some film where the hero makes his way across some barren landscape, presumably searching for truth and justice… or perhaps revenge…

At the fifty second mark, the backing vocals appear, echoing through your headphones as though a chant. It was at this point we knew “Miles Away” belonged on our blog and inside of your ears because this stack of voices is quite magnificent– Cook knew exactly what he was doing when he pressed the record button. The subtle beat keeps your foot tapping, driving the music forward until it ultimately ends with a genre-appropriate guitar lead– nothing too flashy, but definitely dark enough to seal this vibey deal.
