Chloe Southern - “Oil & Water”

Chloe Southern’s “Oil & Water” explores the justification of stealing someone else’s lover. And this is done in such a delightfully sweet way that every listener will immediately forgive her for doing so. The track begins with the simple plucking of an acoustic, shortly joined by Southern’s delicate vocal, which includes those wonderful falsettos that are, at times, barely more than a whisper. She then expresses both sorrow and empathy for her actions– kind of like, “Look, I know I’ve done this terrible thing, but it’s been done to me as well,” in a way, asking for forgiveness while also finding the ability to forgive through the realization that some people fit together and others, as they say, are like oil and water. In a sea of compositions that long for new love or miss the love that once was, Southern poses a significantly fresh take that will definitely fill an emotional niche and, quite frankly, we wish more would explore.

“Oil & Water” comes from Chloe Southern’s new EP, Last Man on Earth, which is available everywhere.
