Caitlin Starr – “Will u b My Girlfriend”

Brooklyn-based indie artist Caitlin Starr has just released the grungy, ‘90s-inspired sounds of “Will u b My Girlfriend.”

Starr has definitely unleashed a sapphic banger here, and just in time for Pride Month. In true alt-rock fashion, “Will u b My Girlfriend” opens with a wall of chaotic feedback as dirty power chords churn out a fiery progression. Moments later, a roll on the snare beckons this beast of a song to explode into a full-band production. No joke, the resulting sound is sonically akin to “Territorial Pissings” and a slew of other tunes that laid the groundwork for modern alternative music.

A light coat of overdrive has been applied to Starr’s vocal performance, letting the lyrics cut through as if they’re another instrument entirely. “Will u b My Girlfriend” wastes absolutely no time getting to the hook, opening with the chorus before dropping into one of the heaviest riff-laden grooves we’ve ever featured on the blog. From there, it shifts into more melodic verses, where the emotional core emerges: wanting commitment but struggling to ask for it—a tension that will feel familiar to anyone who’s ever felt stuck between desire and hesitation.

The song, unfortunately, is over before you know it. But with a mere two-minute runtime, you can listen to it over and over without it ever wearing out its welcome. You may, however, need to come up for air between listens.

There’s more good news: not only is “Will u b My Girlfriend” a blast of angst-soaked alt-rock energy, it also marks the release of Starr’s forthcoming EP Speed Saves. It does what the best songs do—pull you in, shake you loose, and hopefully even inspire you to make something that hits just as hard.
