Rocky Votolato - “Becoming Human”

Rocky Votolato, a Seattle-based indie-folk star, has unveiled “Becoming Human,” the latest single from Wild Roots, his first album in more than seven years, which is now available everywhere you stream music, as well as physically via Spartan Records and Thirty Something Records (Europe/UK). This song is the next acoustic cracker, quickly following “Little Black Diamond,” which we gushed over about a month ago.

Rocky explains: “What to say about Becoming Human now… It’s probably the most meaningful song I’ve ever written or will ever write in my life. I wrote it for my child Kienan who passed away in a car accident last year. I do take comfort in the fact that they were able to hear it before they died and told me how much they loved it. It’s a posthumous love letter in its release. It’s for the world now.”

The production for “Becoming Human” is quiet, lovingly made, and warm; it's a private and intimate experience that brings listening to Votolato's stories and emotions to life. The track is perfectly minimal, coated with a sparse acoustic, strummed and plucked, and given a sparkle by a piano. All in all, it is a melancholic masterpiece and worth anyone’s time.
