Aze - “Jet Matt Set North”

Austrian duo Aze have just released the stunning dream pop track “Jet Matt Set North.”

This one opens to a laid back, yet punchy drum groove. Over the top, a collage of shifting atmospheric layers is allowed to wash over the listener. Shimmering layers of electric guitar cascade and melt mellowly into the composition. Bass anchors the drum groove, giving the song a cool sense of movement. Other textures, such as staccato electric guitar and a weaving acoustic layer, are added in places to enrich the composition and add complexity.

Just past the half way mark of “Jet Matt Set North,” the dynamics begin to grow, with the bass gaining a newfound weight. Synths flare up, padding and arpeggiating, creating a pleasing sense of brief intensity and contrast.

The vocal performance adds a prolific layer of emotion to this chilled track. The delivery is breathy, soulful, and wonderfully expressive. A touch of nostalgia is also introduced with a children’s choir punctuating the vocal narrative. This charming inclusion makes me think of late ‘90s songs, like JAY-Z’s “Hard Knock Life (Ghetto Anthem),” even though the songs are worlds apart, genre-wise.

Jet Matt Set North” can only be described as a dream pop gem. The breezy track is filled relaxed grooves and ever-shifting atmospheric textures, making this a delight to listen to. The song is a wonderful taste of Aze’s forthcoming EP, which is due for release in March.
