Matthew James Aylett - “Last Train”

From his recently released self-titled LP, Matthew James Aylett has sent us the authentically retro-infused sounds of “Last Train.”

This is our first time hearing from the UK-based artist, but when we first pressed play on “Last Train,” we were reminded that there are still some songwriters out there who are bound and determined to keep folk music as pure as all hell. And that’s exactly what you will find here. Pressing play on this song means that you will experience a stripped-back and raw, no-frills performance that is full of nothing but heartfelt emotion and genuine craft.

From the softly strummed acoustic guitar, to Aylett’s gentle humming, “Last Train” will leave a vibrant first impression on all listeners. The arrangement is very sparse, allowing the storytelling to take center stage as it slowly makes its way into your ears and wraps its arms around your heart. Your patience shall be rewarded with the sweet sounds of some fantastic vocal harmonies– easily one of our favorite elements of these folksier numbers. And if you close your eyes, this one will carry you away to the room in which it was recorded.

If you’re a fan of authentic folk music that has not been tainted by modern production trickery, you’re going to quickly fall in love with “Last Train.” And once you do, be sure to dive into the rest of the LP, placed below for your convenience.
