Almost Twins - “Puppeteer”

Leipzig-based indie-folk band Almost Twins have just released the strikingly acid-tinged “Puppeteer,” a song that is vibrantly groovy and slick in its presentation. Growing from its lo-fi openings, it breezily blossoms into a confident acid folk track.

The drums push the listener through the song with a texture-rich, hypnotic swagger. The steady rhythmic groove adds depth through shifting dynamics and well-crafted transitions and embellishments. Bass enhances this groove with a thick pulse as acoustic guitar weaves with a rich expressiveness.

What makes “Puppeteer” special is the sun-soaked, kaleidoscopic musical textures that shift majestically across the musical canvas. At the heart of these layers are the warm, sprawling tones of electric piano. In the spaces that are left, Almost Twins allow the jazzy elements of saxophone and modulating trumpets to dance sublimely. These flourishes create a psychedelic atmosphere that is comparable to the works of John Martyn or Talk Talk at their prime.

Just when you think “Puppeteer” can’t get any better, the brakes are applied, allowing the song to die back to an immersive, Brian Eno-esque ambience. The soothing vocals in this song are filled with a playful warmth as they melodically guide us through the composition. The harmonising backing vocals are awash with a meditative vibe that really sets the track alight. The lyrics reflect on the feeling of losing control and powerlessness.

Puppeteer” is a track filled with subtly poignant lyrics and ambient-tinged psychedelic grooves. The song is taken from the upcoming debut album, Hands / Trees, which will be released later this year, but you can pre-save it here.
