Allie Dever arrives on the blog with her hauntingly bittersweet debut track “Dog.”
“Dog” is a mournful and melancholic indie folk song, but it is also incredibly magical. It is a song with depth and a redemptive beauty. It aches, but there is something incredibly uplifting about the music, in which I would draw comparisons to Phoebe Bridgers, S.G. Goodman and Marissa Nadler.
The composition is simple but effective. It doesn’t need embellishments to make it any more gorgeous than what it is. The track is built around the golden, restless energy of acoustic guitar, rousing surges of violin, and that is it. But the instruments work as one, imbuing a feeling of ebb and flow and creating a stunning emotional arc.
The vocal performance of Allie Dever is deeply yearning and filled with folky inflections. It is an emotional, confessional and weary delivery, where every twist and turn of the lyrics can only be described as completely devastating, especially when accompanied by the lingering harmonies that tenderly support the delivery.

The production was built to preserve that vulnerability while allowing the frustration and anger underneath it to gradually surface and build throughout the duration of the song.”
