New York-based singer-songwriter W. Y. Huang has returned to the blog with the indie folk track, “Give It Time.”

This song is founded around the warm tones of fingerpicked acoustic guitars, fostering an intimate, yet intricate sense of melody. This is heightened over key areas as the arrangement peels back to one guitar layer that has a wonderful, live-recorded vibe. The weaving, soothing tones are beautifully tender, complementing the soft, emotive vocals and other layers applied on top.

Musically, “Give It Time“ feels like a magnificent textural exploration of lush, delicate layers. Mellow electric guitar warbles tenderly over certain sections, whilst the bass supports with warmth and depth. Spritely touches of piano give a musical feeling of clarity, delightfully tying into the lyrics. Organ and flute-like timbres are also applied, heightening the emotional resonance of the track.

The vocal of Huang is delivered with a soft and gentle quality, which is reminiscent of acts such as Sufjan Stevensor Elliott Smith. Huang elegantly weaves the words through the music, further drawing the listener into the beauty of this track. The performance is exquisitely authentic.

Huang wrote the song while struggling with the sudden onset of chronic pain, allowing it to convey “affliction, loss, and change.” He adds: “This was the first time I wrote a song to myself. There were things I needed to hear and feel to journey through this chapter in my life, and this was my attempt at giving that to myself. Perhaps it might help someone else coping with tough times as well.”

Give It Time” is the second single from W. Y. Huang’s forthcoming EP, Knots, which is due for release on May 28th.
