verygently – “CHANGIN’ MY WAYS”

Nashville-based singer-songwriters Drew Erwin, Joey Hendricks, and Tristan Bushman, aka verygently, have just released “CHANGIN’ MY WAYS,” the latest single from their forthcoming LP SORRY SARAH.

CHANGIN’ MY WAYS” is a song about imagining change without the ability to commit to it—stuck in an endless loop of self-sabotage disguised as indecision. And although this subject matter hits pretty close to home for us, it was ultimately the expertly plucked acoustic guitar that drew us in. Most of the song is recorded up close and personal, with just the guitar and a vulnerable vocal performance that is so raw it feels like a confession.

In terms of production, the track is left untouched by the digital crutch of Auto-Tune, instead relying on pristine layers of harmony to lift key moments. These additional vocal textures land most powerfully on the refrain, and “CHANGIN’ MY WAYS” ultimately feels like three friends singing their hearts out in your living room.

The arrangement picks up a few more passengers on the track’s gradual ascent into its crescendo, including a vibey electric guitar that fills in the moments between verse and chorus. And before the final chorus, some deep notes from the bass arrive in time to usher in a vintage-tinged drum kit—if you’re not singing along by this point, then you’re doing it wrong.
