TOMI - “NUN”

LA-based singer-songwriter-producer Pam Autuori, aka TOMI, returns to us with the slowcore and dreamy sounds of her latest indie rock jaunt, “NUN.”

The song begins with some vinyl record crackle before TOMI’s vocal arrives atop the righteous chords of a retro-tinged guitar. To our ears, the effects board consists of some reverb and tremolo, hitting all the right spots as “NUN” plots its melodic course.

TOMI takes the listener down the fleeting twists and turns of wanting to give up everything in order to become a nun, hitting us over the head with her former shame and feelings of guilt. However, without them, the track would never resonate as deeply as it does, igniting those first distorted bursts of indie-rock energy with a celebratory flame.

The rhythm section begins to spread itself across the canvas of the second verse, bringing with it some synthy arpeggios and an emotive vocal performance that bears all the weight of ‘90s angst. And as all of this unbridled energy funnels into a breakdown that mirrors the song’s beginning, rest assured that the track’s brute force returns to kick your ass once again.

NUN” is filled to its brim with dynamic shifts that will cause listeners to imagine it blasting from a stage and across a crowded sea of music lovers. The gang vocals on the final third will make damn sure of that as they lead us into a dramatic ending that showcases emotional glimpses of TOMI’s falsetto.
