New music from Jake Thistle
New Jersey-based singer-songwriter Jake Thistle debuts on the blog with “The Only Man to Make it Through the Dance,” the latest single from his LP A Stranger By Design.
We do not typically delve into the more upbeat end of the indie spectrum, but there’s a distinct War on Drugs vibe happening here that we’ve found quite irresistible. Pressing play invites some positive energy into your ears and, given the current state of the world, we’ll take all the positivity we can get. “The Only Man to Make it Through the Dance” offers a full-band production, driven by a relentless rhythm section and topped with an ultra-catchy melody. At first listen, we swore it was a synth, but it could very well be an effected electric guitar. The point is that it’s bound to keep you humming long after the song has ended.
Where Jake Thistle truly excels is in his matter-of-fact storytelling delivery, which again echoes Adam Granduciel, as well as the grandeur of Springsteen and Petty. With “The Only Man to Make it Through the Dance,” we find him exploring the strange, winding path of perseverance, as the song's enigmatic lyrics follow a figure who somehow makes it through the dance while time remains perpetually out of step. And yet, rather than treating survival as an endpoint, Thistle's narrator simply keeps dancing.
This is some straight-up poppy indie rock served up from Jersey, ready for the radio and your favorite road-trip playlist. A bright piano highlight adds another layer of melodic sparkle to the arrangement, helping the song feel even bigger without sacrificing its effortless charm. More importantly, it’s the kind of song that reminds us why we keep coming back to music in the first place: sometimes you just need something that makes you want to roll the windows down and keep moving.
