The Moss - “Darkness”
From Salt Lake City, USA, The Moss have just released the vibrantly compelling “Darkness.”
“Darkness” is an indie rock track that leans strongly into the territory of 1970s dancefloor anthem. It is sleek, urgent, glittering, feeling like a cross between the cinematically tense “Showdown” by ELO and the spacious “Atomic” by Blondie.
From start to finish, you are swept away on the insistent, kinetic energy of the four-on-the-floor beat and funky, prowling bass line. On top is layer upon layer of sounds and textures that give the record a lush sonic glow. Every element is pure ear candy. The guitar is exquisitely restrained, sparking, rhythmic and angularly purring. Synths imbue an analogue retro futuristic glamour whilst little dashes of percussion add to the excitement.
The Moss do not fail us in the vocal department either. Dripping with style the delivery is smooth, intimate, confessional and completely locked into the groove. Over the choruses, the delivery morphs into something more emotional, urgent and delightfully bordering on the unhinged. Supporting by layered backing vocals and touches of falsetto the performance is truly intoxicating.
On the track The Moss adds: ““Darkness” is written as this cyclical thought, of caring deeply about someone, but needing space from them to sort out your own emotions.”
