The Donnis Trio - “Ancient Lungs”

The Donnis Trio is a folk/rock band from San Diego, CA and they have just released their amazing new song, “Ancient Lungs.” This folk song is a masterful blend of traditional acoustic instrumentation and yet maintains a great modern feel. The fingerpicking guitar sets the stage for a warm and reflective vocal. The vocal is deep and sings as if it embodies a lifetime’s worth of experience. It is accompanied by a subtle, yet evocative cello that gracefully hits all of the deep notes that the song needed. The drums gradually appear out of nowhere and provide a gentle, yet steady rhythm that sets the pace for the song. The percussion is complex, but it holds a simple and steady swagger.

As the song progresses, it builds to a main section that features graceful violins. Although not a lot changes instrumentally, there is a sense of the song growing wings and lifting up through the satisfying groove, instrumentation, and vocals in this section. The dynamic breaks throughout the the entirety of the track bring a sense of incredibly classy tension and release, always leading us back to the fingerpicking guitar at the beginning of the song. Overall, this is a beautifully crafted piece of music that has a real sense of wisdom, character, and beauty. This is definitely one to check out.
