Tancred - “Mirepoix”

The first new music from Tancred (Jess Abbott) since the Nightstand LP from 2018 has been released. “Mirepoix,'' which features Jenny Owen Youngs, is a truly beautiful number and had me captivated from start to finish.

The song is a lovely acoustic ballad, and Abbott sings the words with a charming tenderness. I particularly enjoy the interesting sound effects– one of which, I believe, is muffled, backward guitar playing… Others sound like crushed fuzz… The song's use of this variety of sounds results in a wistful and contemplative atmosphere. Additionally, the arrangement consists of scattered, multiple pad noises that exquisitely enhance the ambiance. This is a pretty lovely song, and if you saw it performed live, it would be the one where you could hear a pin drop. It really has my attention and was happily played a few times before I started this review... It was that good.

Abbott says: “Mirepoix is about how important people are to each other…Especially with how short our time here is, and how we’re all kind of made up of the same stuff, the same little pieces all mixed together.” You heard her people– our time here is short, so make the most of it by putting this song into your daily rotation:
