Gert Taberner - “To Break”

Vancouver-based Gert Taberner last appeared on the blog with “Hannah,” a song born from immense, personal tragedy. And carrying along with that same theme, he has delivered another heartfelt and melancholic gem to the world with the release of his latest single, “To Break.”

It’s no secret that we prefer our indie folk bundled into a package of deep introspection and boundless misery, often because that’s what we find residing within ourselves. And once you press play on this number, that’s exactly what you shall find. The acoustic guitar is finger-plucked to perfection against an elegant and cinematic backdrop that consists of reverberated banjo and electric guitar– slightly reminiscent of the soundscapes from Novo Amor, one of our favorites.

Taberner, himself, is exploring his own emotional turmoil, but he does it in such a way that it allows listeners a chance to reflect upon their own profound journey through the darkness. His voice is soft and tender, honest and emotive, and he’s been blessed with one of those benevolent tenors that you could listen to for days on end. He’s avoided any deliberate and obvious processing, leaving the song to sound as though you’re eavesdropping on his spirit, which provides for one hell of a listening experience.

Your patience shall be rewarded with a powerful climax as the song expands and lifts into its full-band crescendo. And as vast as the arrangement becomes at this point, some of our favorite parts lie in the ghostly, reverberated guitar notes that line the entire production. Don’t be surprised if by pressing you play you find one of your new favorite songs– “To Break” is a masterpiece that arrived right when we needed it and we’re sharing it here in case you need it, too.
