SORRYNOTSORRY - “Disappear”

Brooklyn-based indie psych duo SORRYNOTSORRY return with the atmospheric ambient psych track, “Disappear.” This is a track that I would describe as a cosmic, introspective mood piece, reminiscent of The Verve’s “Endless Life.” In a similar fashion, it perfectly captures the psychedelic spirit, atmosphere and soundscape of SORRYNOTSORRY.

It is a hazy meditation that ambiently drifts and builds as if you are caught in a trance. Beautifully stripped back and intimate, the textural Nick McCabe-esque guitar work forms the backbone of the arrangement. The playing is not showy, but it expertly uses echo, reverb and distortion to create a liminal atmosphere that shimmers, dissolves and blurs the lines between melodies and drones. There is also a push and pull between brightness and heaviness with sounds that drift like fog, while distorted undercurrents break through permeating a feeling of menace.

The haunting vocal hovers between the earthy and ethereal like a cross between the emotional clarity of Madonna from her “Ray of Light” era and the airier textures of Grimes. It is a performance that is laid bare, unfiltered, shifting from fragility to strength. Supported by achingly beautiful, enveloping harmonies, it is a delivery that lingers long after the final notes.

Lyrically, “Disappear” is a song that bears its soul whilst exploring feelings of loss, longing, heartache and vulnerability, with vocalist Samantha Dagnino adding: “If you pay close attention, you can hear the emotion in my voice. I didn’t replace the vocals in the studio even though I was sobbing while recording this song. I was singing from a broken heart. There’s something about capturing a moment like that, where you are alone in your room with a guitar expressing a deep feeling, you can’t replace or replicate that in a studio or on a computer.”

Guitarist Andrés Cottin continues: “Samantha suggested that I record a couple of guitar takes to give the song an arc. My idea was to introduce elements from ambient guitar and make the song feel like it’s growing and add some shimmer.”

Heartfelt and hypnotic, “Disappear” is the final mesmerising glimpse of “The Other Side,” the forthcoming SORRYNOTSORRY album, slated for release October 17th. Connect with SORRYNOTSORRY: Instagram | Spotify | Bandcamp | TikTok
