shepup – “For Andy”
Queens, New York-based singer-songwriter shepup has recently released “For Andy,” a queer, indie-folk love song.
We’ve long been fans of shepup’s ability to craft vulnerable folk tunes, as documented in our review of “Wave / Honey Barge,” and we are very pleased to inform you that her penchant for whimsically intimate melody remains intact. “For Andy” is an extremely raw and vulnerable ode to her partner, relying quite heavily upon humor and mundane details to establish a genuine connection, filling listeners with hope that they might one day find the same.
From the acoustic guitar to the sugary sweet layers of harmony vocals, it is impossible not to be swept up in the track’s warm, unabashedly affectionate charm. Even without knowing Andy personally, we are granted access to their relationship through the lyrics, and it is obvious that this is not just a love song, but a celebration of companionship.
And if that were not enough, “For Andy” gives us a dynamic arrangement built around drums, bass, and harp, each element carrying the song forward without taking away from its ability to sound as though it’s being sung directly into our ears. With an adorable video created by Andy to accompany the tune, shepup makes good on the promise that this is the “gayest and most romantic collaboration of all time.”
