shepup – “At the Light”
From Queens, New York, shepup returns with “At the Light,” a celebration of an intensely close, lifelong friendship.
We’ve been fans of shepup for a while now, and we often marvel at how personal their lyrics always are, as though we’re being drawn into the social circle of lyricist Sheila Flaherty. From inside jokes to youthful chaos, shepup trusts the listener with the kind of intimate details usually reserved for close friends.
Sonically, “At the Light” blends the best of two indie worlds: folk and rock, beginning with a distinct, lo-fi duet of acoustic guitar and vocal. Halfway through the first verse, the bass and drums arrive, adding a whimsical bounce to a sense of camaraderie that everyone longs to experience. The track isn’t reaching for mainstream appeal; it nestles into a little niche that echoes the intimacy of the relationship it describes.
With vocal harmonies placed in all the right spots, the refrain bears a ’60s-inspired pop melody that epitomizes the term “earworm.” “At the Light” avoids sentimentality and, instead, focuses on ridiculous memories, obscure references, accidents, drinking, humiliation, tattoos, and jokes. The accumulation of these details reveals the depth of the relationship better than a straightforward declaration ever could.
