Shaina Hayes - “Flourish”

Montreal-based folk artist Shaina Hayes is back with the luminous “Flourish,” the first glimpse at her upcoming LP.

Flourish” begins with the quiet and reserved strums of an acoustic guitar, drenched in a thick sheen of reverb that slightly warbles like the sounds of yesteryear. A tight and snappy rhythm section finds its place in the arrangement, imbuing the track with some gentle, forward propulsion along with a warm, vintage glow.

Hayes’ vocal arrives and we are immediately reminded of all the reasons we have never been able to say no to her music. Over the years, we’ve featured everything her camp has sent our way, and once you hear her voice, this is more than justified. There is a natural, matter-of-factly, authentic sense of melody and storytelling that permeates from her delivery– one akin to Feist or Joni Mitchell.

On the refrain, Hayes gives the listener a playful tune from her breathy upper register, with a call-and-response performance from the pedal steel. With divine moments of subtle vocal harmonies and a production that offers heavy helpings of dynamic flux, “Flourish“ will leave you longing for the rest of Shaina Hayes’ forthcoming album.

Inspired by both the actual word and John O’Donohue’s Anam Cara: A Book of Celtic Wisdom, “Flourish” is grounded in a gentle renewal and unwavering faith that our loved ones will becomes the truest versions of themselves.
