Sam Weber - “Kind Dog”

From his forthcoming LP, Clear + Pain, North Saanich, Canada-based singer-songwriter Sam Weber arrives on the blog with the raw sounds of “Kind Dog.”

Pressing the play button invites you directly into the private world of Sam Weber. “Kind Dog” is the kind of song that sounds as though a group of musicians simply gathered around a mic or two and let things happen. The track enters the ears almost as freely as jazz, most notably through the work of Garret Lang’s upright bass– the deep, warm notes glide effortlessly through the arrangement and, at times, it sounds as though you are being gifted a private performance.

A softly swinging beat from a drum kit hammers out the pulse of “Kind Dog,” with glorious flourishes from the keys as the acoustic guitar drones in the distance. All of this culminates in a sound that is intimately dramatic, ebbing and flowing to heavenly perfection. But a major highlight here is, of course, Weber’s vocal performance, which is ever so rich and worn-in, lovingly reminiscent of Gregory Alan Isakov as he delivers line after line of emotionally honest lyrics.

About “Kind Dog,” Weber adds: “I love how reserved the band played it. We played it so quiet and so together, it's like every little nuance and creak of a chair was catalogued on the fly in all the players' attention. Everything was heard and felt and incorporated as we went. It made for a really focused and intense process, but super musical approach from all the people involved.”

From start to finish, “Kind Dog” reaches right inside of you and stirs the soul with authentic ease, taking listeners on a four-minute, vintage vibe of a joyride. This is the first we’re hearing from Sam Weber, but we certainly hope it’s not the last.
