Ruby Waters - “Heather”

There is nothing more satisfying than discovering those artists who need little else than a single microphone to catch the ears of the world. Ruby Waters is one such artist. Her latest track, “Heather,” was recorded in one take, in the same room as whoever was playing guitar (it was not listed– our apologies– it could be Ruby playing, for all we know). There is no fancy production work, no special effects– it is simply two minutes and thirty-two seconds of Ruby’s raw and soulful talent. Her heart is not just on her sleeve– it is being torn out and put on display for everyone to see.

The words allude to the idea that ‘Heather’ is no longer with us, presumably, and based upon the lyrical content, because of terrible circumstances. This is not just a song about missing someone– once you hear Ruby’s vocals, you will understand that this is a song about trying to sing someone back to life… or an attempt to will them back into yours. Either way, it will deeply stir the listener’s emotions and we suppose that it’s probably best left to your interpretation. This is ours.

For those of you who have not yet pressed play, we don’t want to spoil it too much, but if you’re a fan of Amy Winehouse, Ruby’s voice and subject matter will light you right up. Now, if you’ll excuse us, we are going to play this one all day.

While the video is not the exact same version as the one she released to DSPs, it is a very raw, almost chilling performance and deserves to be seen/heard:
