Robin Kenny - “Hoping/Fading”
Singer-songwriter Robin Kenny, from Ottawa, Canada, has just released the hypnotic indie rock track “Hoping/Fading.”
“Hoping/Fading” gives the impression that the track was born from a musical jam. It is free flowing, vividly experimental with textures and spatial exploration that are incredibly enjoyable to listen to.
The immensely fulfilling music is built on rich swells of breathy metallic texture, howling windy flute sounds, sentimental piano, hazy vistas of Fripp-esque guitar. All floating alluringly over crisp post punk drums and melodic bass. The music is a woozy concoction of sprawling and unexpected worlds. Arguably the music lacks hooks and grooves but they are not needed. This is music to totally submerge yourself into bringing to mind the Flood produced Warpaint album, as well as the music of Angel Olsen.
For much of the track we are treated to an unusual, dreamy, hushed vocal that oozes a haunting outpouring of detached emotion. What increases the mysterious properties of the performance is a beautiful rising inflection at the end of most lines that heightens a sense of ambiguity and uncertainty.
Lyrically, “Hoping/Fading” is a deeply personal record. Robin Kenny elaborates: “Hoping/Fading is the rainbow child of a messy breakup and acceptance of the future’s uncertainties. Wrapped in the warmth of an indie folk ballad and shimmering with dream pop sensitivity; Hoping/Fading is a song perfect for pondering new perspectives while savouring life’s ambiguities.”
Complex, subdued and beautifully ethereal, “Hoping/Fading” has it all, from brash immediacy to dizzying labyrinths of soundscaping. Connect with Robin Kenny: Spotify | Soundcloud | Youtube | Bandcamp | Instagram
