Ranger - “Together”

Canada-based Ranger have just delivered the soft and retro sounds of “Together,” a song written and recorded while on tour back in April.

Hosting a cornucopia of delightful ear candy, the track begins with a quick drum fill before revealing the most ghostly and angelic backing vocals that we’ve heard in quite some time. If you’ve ever read our blog, you’ll know that we simply cannot resist a good “oooooh” layer of vocals, so we are very pleased to inform you that they arrive soon after pressing the play button and are a recurring motif throughout the song.

Vibey guitar trickles down into the arrangement atop a retro-infused rhythm section that will have you pining for the music of yesteryear. And while we’re on the subject of pining, the richly delivered vocals will feed you lyrics that describe “the hardships of maintaining a long term relationship.” The elegant and ethereal sounds of a lap steel permeate the production, inviting you to get lost inside of this magnificent sound.

Vocal harmonies softy expand the hook, dreamy and soothing as they enter your ears. Tastefully utilized lead guitar fills in the empty spaces, at times caressing the tones that are provided by the lap steel. The end result is a moving piece of music that will likely have you listening on repeat as you miss the presence of a former lover.

Together” is a lo-fi exemplar of slowcore and will have you completely enchanted in its gentle sway for the entire duration. This is our first time hearing from Ranger, but we certainly hope it’s not the last.
