Primula – “Nothing New”

From Sweden, four-piece indie outfit Primula have just released the slow-burning and meditative folk sounds of “Nothing New,” the title track to their debut EP.
Across its three minute and forty second runtime, “Nothing New” takes listeners on a raw journey through a jazz-infused dreamland of intimately charged folk sounds. Beginning with just a lone acoustic guitar supporting a vulnerable vocal performance, this tune nestles right into your personal space as though it’s being performed right in front of you.
The rhythm section makes an abrupt appearance halfway through the second verse, expanding the soundscape and building an effortless momentum. Far above the arrangement, an ethereal layer of warbling ambience fills the remaining space in the production, giving the track a somewhat otherworldly edge. Additional vocal layers begin to take shape, ensuring there’s more than enough here to warrant repeat listens.
But where “Nothing New” truly stands out is in the risks it takes. Perhaps it’s the quartet’s jazz influence, but the middle eight pulls back entirely to reveal a fragile acoustic guitar that eventually builds into a glorious peak of primo musicianship. The track finally leaves us with the mantra: “I will find my way,” words that we are fairly confident most of us should be repeating to ourselves on a daily basis.
