Brooklyn-based singer-songwriter Olive Riggio has just released the dazzling new track, “Tropical Depression.” The song is a musical voyage of grooves and rhythms, effortlessly blending folk and indie pop/ rock to create something strikingly unique.

Right from the opening, “Tropical Depression” captivates the listener with its masterful use of rhythms and texture. A drum groove creates a shuffling sense of rapid, forward momentum. Electric guitar complements this mood with a sense of skipping melodies and ethereal swells that weave dreamily around the composition. The vibes are wonderfully breezy and vivid.

As the song progresses, the dynamics grow, thanks to the addition of bass. The drums also have an awesome feeling of fluctuation between the shuffling groove and a slower, walking beat. The percussion really is a pleasure to hear, helping to add excitement and anticipation. The song builds to a sophisticated crescendo that feels decidedly indie pop/ rock. Strings are added here, giving a pleasant sense of refinement.

Riggio’s vocal performance truly consolidates the shifting moods of the track, making the arrangement feel complete. The delivery has a gentle, expressive, and dreamy sense of melody, which are difficult not to get lost in. Lyrically, “Tropical Depression” uses the metaphor of waiting for a tropical storm to examine the experience of being stuck, but learning to be resilient and surrender to those feelings.

Tropical Depression” is a captivating track, full of shifting grooves and layers. You won’t regret pressing play on this one.
