oktehya – “complicated”
From the Pacific Northwest, oktehya has just released “complicated,” the fifth and final single from her new EP, a changeable feast.
Every once in a while, we hear a song that resides so far outside of our wheelhouse that curiosity draws us into it. “complicated” is filled to the brim with layers of synths and digital production, wonderfully toeing the sonic line between indie pop and contemporary R&B, all without falling into the abyss of modern dance numbers.
For such an electronic ball of energy, the rhythm is reasonably paced, leaving it gentle enough to play while you contemplate how healthy/unhealthy your relationship might be. Truth be told, what finally won us over with “complicated” is the snare sound during the verse, which scratches a certain “When Doves Cry” itch (you’ll know what we mean when you hear it).
Topping it off, oktehya delivers a multilayered, alt-pop vocal performance that allows her personality to shine through without being overproduced. There is something truly magical happening here that will make you want to dive into the rest of the new EP a changeable feast, which just so happens to be available everywhere.
