Brooklyn-based duo MVSO have just released the beautifully stripped-back and haunting indie folk song, “Hourglass.”

Hourglass” is built upon delicate, finger-plucked acoustic guitars that create a mesmerising sonic tapestry. The weaving brighter notes in places are given a muted texture, infusing a feeling of mystery and intimacy. The fingerpicking style also strikingly emphasises the bass notes, enhancing the meditative vibes whilst lending a warm, gentle pulse to the composition.

As the track dreamily unfolds, layers are applied to enrich the atmospherics and sense of emotional depth. Strings that imbue a sense of poignant melancholy swell, whilst ethereal synth pads contribute a feeling of otherworldliness. These layers add a satisfying layer of complexity, all while maintaining the intimate nature of the arrangement.

At the crescendo, fretless bass introduces a meandering pulse as the kick and snare pleasurably lock in the groove. The inclusion of these dynamic elements injects contrast and resolution to the haunting tones.

The vocals on “Hourglass” are breathy and intimate, yet skilfully burst with rousing melody in all the right places. The expressive tones of the two vocals intertwine and infuse elegant harmonies. Haunting and ethereal backing vocals are also gently layered in for support, which adds a rich sense of depth.

Hourglass” is stunning indie folk track that strikes the right balance between simplicity and complexity, mystery, and resolution.
