Miya Zawa - “Chain Smoking”
From Australia, Miya Zawa has just released the raw and mellow bedroom vibes of “Chain Smoking,” a song about the willingness to do anything for the ones that we love, without necessarily considering the outcome.
Pressing the play button invites some lo-fi acoustic guitar into your ears, strewn across the top of a soft synth pad, resulting in one of the most intimately produced numbers we’ve heard in a very long time. If you told us that “Chain Smoking” was being performed just down the hall or in the next room, we’d have no choice but to believe you.
But where “Chain Smoking” truly wins over the listener is within its multitracked vocal delivery, with numerous, magical layers of voices permeating the sonic landscape. While the entire arrangement is quite sparse, these additional vocal textures allow the track to present itself as a seemingly endless ocean of sound, rising and falling into the listener via tremendous waves of emotionally-charged lyrics.
About “Chain Smoking,” Miya Zawa adds: “I was seeing someone who would find a four leaf clover in every patch they looked in! I was always jealous of the fact I have NEVER found a four leaf clover. I remember as a kid always pretending I found one by putting two together. it's a soft love song really “you’d be the type i’d leak my soft porn for” wanting to do anything for a person and not thinking about any of the repercussions.”
The only real issue here is that “Chain Smoking” is just under three minutes in length, so you have to listen to it on repeat in order to take a long, introspective swim in its otherworldly existence.
