Los Angeles-based Mimi Pretend has just released the spellbindingly melancholic dream pop track “Smith Lake.”

This tune opens to gentle and atmospheric synth textures that movingly pad the composition. The reflective atmosphere is enhanced exquisitely by lush hints of electric guitar that roll and glide mellowly through the soundscape. As the song approaches the half way point the dynamics begin to grow, thanks to a gentle slow tempo drum groove.

The tom hits are charmingly panned, creating a sense of sway and ear candy. This groove quickly breaks to a harder snare driven beat, offering contrast and a more determined sense of forward momentum. Electric guitar shimmers and cries vividly reinforcing the hazy and immersive vibes. Underneath the bass establishes a pleasing warm foundation.

Mimi Pretend’s vocals on “Smith Lake” are strikingly sultry and languid. Coated in a beautiful layer of reverb the gentle, breathy tones are hauntingly dreamlike and mysterious. The performance permeates a sense of vulnerability and intimacy. Lyrically, the track depicts a bittersweet story of a family trauma suffered by a long-lost love, exploring unresolved emotions and the ability to find happiness amidst sadness.

Smith Lake” is a captivating and delightfully immersive track. The composition effortlessly grows into dream pop anthem awash with elegant hazy sounds. This tune is taken from Mimi Pretend’s forthcoming EP.
