Mimi - “High Expectations”

If there was a cloth from which we cut our favorite sounds, Germany-based Mimi would be one of the threads that held it together. And if you happen to be looking for some lo-fi/ bedroom folk music, look no further than her latest single, “High Expectations.”

From the very first pluck of the acoustic guitar, it becomes quite clear that our ears are in for an authentic treat. The mood is gentle and raw, melancholically setting the course for the rest of the tune, allowing the listener to wash away the agony of the workweek and gently slip into weekend mode.

Mimi’s vocal soon appears and it bears all of the marks of our favorite singers. From Julien Baker to Maple Glider, her voice enters your ears, effortlessly stirring your emotions as you become completely enchanted by the sound. It isn’t long before the production starts to expand with some warm bass and additional layers of vocals.

The arrangement remains relatively sparse for the song’s duration, though the swelling of harmonies and doubles will lead you to believe otherwise. The magic within “High Expectations” definitely lies within the resounding vocal work, providing an intimate depth to an already emotionally boundless performance.
