Middle Priest - “Fingernail”

USA-based indie rock band Middle Priest have just released “Fingernail,” a gorgeous song full of warm vocals and lush guitar tones.

An acoustic guitar forms the backbone of the song, supplying a warm and bright rhythmic groove. The dynamics of the acoustic guitar grow gently before the other accompanying instruments join. Forward momentum is given by the drums, whilst bass provides a warm pulse underneath.

As the song progresses, electric lead guitar joins, weaving gentle tones, vivid licks, and adding a satisfying depth and vigour to the track. Contrast is also offered by the electric guitar as we reach the half way point. These smooth tones evolve into increasingly gritty and raw howls that linger and give a sense of urgency to the performance.

The vocals on “Fingernail” are what really steal the show. The performance starts off with a nice hint of introspection. The measured and gentle start quickly breaks into a classic, indie-rock delivery. Words are held onto and allowed to linger, giving a real sense of authenticity. The layered backing and vocal doubling thicken up the performance and heighten the track’s sense of urgency.

A story of reflection and the desire for freedom lies beneath the music. The lyrics are poetic and creative and have all the hallmarks of a great indie rock song. With “Fingernail,” Middle Priest have created a song that perfectly captures the qualities of indie rock: it’s personal, dynamic, and emotive. Brimmed full of great guitar textures and vocal, this is one that should be played immediately.
