Melissa Weikart – “Crash”

Do yourself a favor and wrap your ears around “Crash,” the latest single from Paris-based singer-songwriter Melissa Weikart.

This lo-fi bedroom-pop dreamland sits in the uneasy space between trying to remain kind and present while quietly realizing a relationship is becoming unsustainable. But if you set its subject matter aside for a moment, you don’t so much listen to “Crash” as you sink into it.

While comfortably existing along the digital end of the musical spectrum, it’s quite easy to imagine the raw piano chords resonating from your favorite coffeehouse. And the vocal performance is so intimate that it sounds as though it was captured late at night, at times barely above a whisper, careful not to wake anyone else in the house.

As the tape-worn beat arrives, “Crash” shifts into a pseudo-jazz state, with electronic waves of ambience folding around a melancholic piano melody. The track feels built for complete immersion, especially through headphones, where its details start to blur and bloom into one another.

With moments of creamy bass lines, additional vocal layering, and a patchwork of samples, “Crash” opens up and starts to feel almost weightless. It’s a window into Melissa Weikart’s world, and leaves you wanting to see much more of it.
