meira - ‘Manic Pixie Therapist’

meira certainly has an impressive list of accolades– especially for an artist her age. From having her cover of “Ain’t No Sunshine” receive over 22 million views, being featured and reviewed on television, and earning the National YoungArts Award in Jazz Voice, it really seems like she’s done it all. And now we’re here to tell you about her new EP, Manic Pixie Therapist.

This EP may very well be classified as a collection of pop songs, but we are pleased to inform you that it contains something for everyone. So let’s start with the title track, “Manic Pixie Therapist.” If you’ve been keeping up with this blog, you’ll know that we often feature music of the indie folk variety. And this one begins a bit differently than most songs in this genre, with some melodic keys over a softly strummed guitar, but meira’s vocal work definitely falls within our folksy parameters– the main is wonderfully doubled and, at times, even strangely reminiscent of Bon Iver, with harmonies in all of the right places, breaking into falsetto when it needs to. This track crescendos over its course, adding instruments along its melancholy way. If you’re new to meira’s music, this is a great place to start.

Next up, we have “Missing in Your Heart,” a ballad about being in love with your best friend, even though they’re in love with someone else. This song walks the listener through all the helpless and hopeless moments that such a love entails, over the top of some considerably intricate guitar playing. The recording is a bit more sparse than the title track, but it is definitely another song that is bound to wind up on playlists for the broken hearted– and there are a lot of them. And thank goodness, because it seems as though this one almost didn’t make the cut: meira explains that, “After quickly amassing tens of thousands of views and comments on TikTok, “Missing in Your Heart” became a last-minute decision to record and add to my debut EP.
