McKay - “Bad Liar”

Nashville-based McKay have just released “Bad Liar.” This dynamic track is a stripped-back, gritty, and anthemic treat for all fans of Americana.

For me, it is the contrasting dynamics that really grab my attention. “Bad Liar” beautifully alternates between contemplative verses that wonderfully flesh out the lyrical story, with loud and passionate chorus sections. The song is built around warm acoustic guitar, which gently carries us through the song. Other instruments only join to support when needed over the verses. Splashes of electric guitar enhance the melodic mood and the kick drum and tambourine help to build the dynamic intensity. Later on, gritty electric rhythm guitar and melancholic lap steel are added to the arrangement. The whole sonic experience is engrossing and captivating.

It is the loud, passionate and “one hell of an ear worm” chorus of “Bad Liar” that really sets this song alight. It is bound to have you singing along at the top of your lungs. The tension and release of this section is cemented with the soaring harmonica lines. Displaying dynamics, intimacy, and passion, McKay provide a wonderfully authentic vocal performance. The lyrics deal with broken promises, plans that never come to fruition, and being honest with oneself– all of which are brought to live by the performance.

McKay’s “Bad Liar” is an exquisite song that will leave an impact on all who hear. The chorus is impossible to forget and there is a “universal” quality to this song which, for me, makes it an anthem. Make sure you check this one out.
