May Payne – “Solid Ground”

London-based singer-songwriter May Payne captures something beautifully raw and deeply human with “Solid Ground.”

“Solid Ground” is a melancholic, tender and quietly intense track that sits somewhere between alt-rock and indie folk, with a sound that feels to me rooted in the 1990s. This is not a carefully polished arrangement and it doesn’t need to be. Its glorious rough edges are part of the appeal, lending the song a genuine, human touch. Everything comes together in a way that feels both unforced and powerful, building into a rich, full-bodied sound.

Over warm bass and shuffling, gently swinging, unhurried drums, expressive, textured guitar work unfolds alongside glittering acoustic guitar tones. The music is organic and rustic. There’s a beautiful simplicity to the arrangement, yet a real sense of depth, with every element finding its place without ever feeling overworked.

At the heart of “Solid Ground” is May Payne’s vocal. Storytelling, confessional and plain-speaking, it is an exquisitely intimate performance. With a breathy vulnerability and understated honesty, it draws you into the song. It brings real emotional weight to the lyrics, which describe a relationship where desire and tenderness are mixed with shame, fear and feelings of being undeserving of love.

May Payne elaborates: “I wrote Solid Ground at the very beginning of a very important relationship, that stage when everything feels so new and vivid and raw. This song is something like an attempt to capture those intense, bright feelings, that mixture between the overwhelm of new love and the certainty of knowing that you’re right where you’re meant to be. It sounds like me taking a big deep breath and telling myself ‘I know it’s scary, but it's worth it’.”

Melodically direct and gloriously unvarnished, “Solid Ground” is taken from the EP Keeper which is releasing November 13th. Preorder the EP on 12-inch vinyl here.
