Harry Zimm - “Mature Volumes”

Mature Volumes” is the beautiful new release by Harry Zimm. It is a well-crafted piece of music that combines elements of both classic and contemporary soundscapes. I say “classic” in the broad sense, as I am getting notes from all kinds of influences. The dreamy guitar and mellow piano give the song a warm and relaxed atmosphere, which continue throughout its duration. The song also has a slightly dissonant synth pad buried underneath, which adds a unique and unusual feel. The piano melody reminds me of “How Insensitive,” by Oscar Peterson– the song, overall, has that same, reflective atmosphere. The bass is a standout element, but is one that I didn’t notice on the first couple of listens. It definitely provides a rich and dynamic undercurrent to the production. The vocals are relaxed and effortless and reach a brilliant falsetto range halfway through, adding a beautiful touch. The synth break in the middle is unexpected, but adds a contemporary touch to the song. The piano begins to gain a more warped feel and additional, unusual sounds start to appear, but they are never overpowering. The song evolves at the end into a more 1970s-inspired sound. The lyrics are beautifully written and explore the themes of aging and change. “Mature Volumes” is an atmospheric song that feels timeless in its delivery and is definitely one to check out.
