Matu - “Perfect Static”

London-based Matu joins us on the blog with his new release, “Perfect Static,” a song about finding love amidst tension and hardship. Originally from Argentina, Matu has always written his music in English because he claims it’s “easier for me to write about whatever I wanted and be 100% honest in my music” (Matu).

Perfect Static” is a fantastic addition to the indie folk genre. It maintains a steady, stripped back finesse that only the most confident of songwriters are able to successfully execute. From the opening acoustic guitar to his raw and controlled vocals, this song will likely cause you to draw comparisons to a younger version of Damien Rice. His voice glides from note to note, intermingling with delicate vibrato, so gorgeously that it will, no doubt, have you chasing down all of his previous releases. And there is absolutely no shame in that– this dude is fantastic.

For the first forty-five seconds of “Perfect Static,” you will swear that Matu is performing in the same room as you (and if you’ve been reading the blog, this is exactly the reason that we love this genre). However, at forty-six seconds, the song suddenly expands with soft percussion and a synth pad. And as all of this naturally raises the volume of the track, Matu’s vocal gains intensity, like a snowball that has the potential to become an emotional avalanche. Additional elements are added, until the song ultimately reaches its divine crescendo before, like the sea, it retreats back to just his vocal and some warm, acoustical strums.

This is indie folk perfection, people.
