Matt Hibbard - “Get Down” & “Perfect”

Matt Hibbard has released a two-sided single that effectively shows his diverse craft– on one side, we have “Get Down,” a Black Keys-infused garage-rock jam with hints of Black Rebel Motorcycle Club as well as a dash of Chris Isaak. And while that might seem like quite the recipe, it all comes together with the first bite. This thing is raw and gritty with a juicy and unwavering backbeat that swings beneath a slew of down-tuned guitars. Hibbard’s use of his upper register is quite soothing, but be warned: there are some police sirens wailing in the back of this track that caused us peek through our blinds a couple times.

On the flip-side, Hibbard gives us “Perfect,” which lives at the other end of the musical spectrum. While it might still fall into the category of garage rock, it slows things down quite a bit and offers a fantastic look into the dynamics of Hibbard’s songwriting skills. The slow rhythm is accompanied by layers of sweet, vintage guitar tones that are bursting with vibe. The vocals here, however, give the listener a much better glimpse into Hibbard’s varied range and emotion. What “Get Down” lacks in love and tenderness, “Perfect” makes up for in spades. This is the kind of song you can play to celebrate being in love, or you can listen to it as you wonder if you will ever love again.

You can hear both of these tracks and more on Hibbard’s Spotify:
