Ahead of her forthcoming LP, Newcastle-based singer-songwriter Martha Hill has just released “Granite Feet,” a portrait of someone caught between hope and melancholy.
If you happen to be a fan of Haley Heynderickx and Adrianne Lenker, we’ve got some good news for you: “Granite Feet” is a raw and extremely vulnerable sliver of indie folk that does not try to hide behind contemporary pop polish. The sublimely plucked acoustic guitar is so lo-fi that it feels as familiar as the creaks in the floorboards of your hallway. Hill’s vocal enters your ears in a similar, intimate fashion, as though a friend who trusts you with the contents of her heart. Although “Granite Feet” includes some deep notes from a bass and some vocal layering across the refrain, it never once loses sight of its more intimate intentions.
