Maida Rose - “Phoenix”

From The Netherlands, dream pop duo Javièr den Leeuw and Roos Meijer, aka Maida Rose, appear on our blog with “Phoenix,” the first single since the release of their debut album.

Phoenix” opens with some softly padded synth tones before the rhythm appears, forming a soft and steady foundation beneath one of the most fantastic ear-worm melodies that will ever enter your ears. This gentle giant will become firmly lodged inside of your head before the vocal even begins, easily becoming the soundtrack to whatever memory you’re in the middle of making. “Phoenix” is dream pop songwriting at its finest and exactly what we look for when sifting through our stack of submissions.

Once Meijer’s voice appears, it brings the song’s enchantment to a whole new level. It will not be difficult to let “Phoenix” carry you away with its deep, introspective lyrics that navigate “the challenges of taking responsibility for your own life and rising up after an emotionally challenging period.” This kind of subject matter always resonates very deeply within us, but the fact that it’s being delivered to our ears via this sweet, mesmerizing vocal makes it all the more satisfying.

A lower vocal harmony joins on the refrain, ensuring that the soundscape spreads to its fullest capacity. For a dream pop number, the arrangement is fairly simple, using only the ingredients necessary for a sonic success. And once you’ve invited “Phoenix” into your life, you will never want to be without it again.

As a way to celebrate ten years of friendship, Maida Rose will release the EP, Philia, which will be home to “Phoenix” and several others that we also hope to feature on the blog.
