Loose Buttons – “My Gemini”

Despite Loose Buttons being from the USA, “My Gemini” is a track that has a distinctively British indie vibe.

The circular, fizzy guitar riff that acts as the main hook brings to mind the very obscure Oasis deep cut “Can Y’See It Now? (I Can See It Now!!).” It’s not even on Spotify! Similarly, the pulse of the bass and the steady drums foster an almost hypnotic, meditative atmosphere. The bridge of the song explodes into an eruption that feels distinctly like the Doves… wide open and rich with a sense of slow emotional burn. As for the choruses, well, they are just catchy as hell. It is a really hard song to pin down to a single style, but it seems to lift the best of indie music.

The vocal delivery is just as chameleonic. The overall performance gives hints of The Bravery on “An Honest Mistake.” There are traces of Jez Williams from the Doves in the odd inflection, the croon of Alex Turner from Arctic Monkeys, and even a brief touch of Liam Gallagher from the Beady Eye era. The backing vocals only arrive at the chorus providing a staccato like chant that makes you want to play the song again and again. This is really catchy stuff.

At its heart, “My Gemini” is a song about life’s choices and the person you choose to make them with. Touching on the different paths you take and the one you always return to. No matter how far you wander, the person you love stays on your mind.

Buoyant with catchability and upbeat optimism, “My Gemini” seems to hit all the emotions you want to feel from a song. Bittersweet but not tragic, chaotic but affectionate, nostalgic yet still living in the moment, and self-aware without being cynical.

My Gemini” is taken from the forthcoming new album You Came To See Magic slated for release on August 21st. Connect with Loose Buttons: Bandcamp | Spotify | Instagram | Facebook | Youtube
