Lone Tells - “The First One”

Ukrainian artist Lone Tells has just released the gorgeously meditative “The First One.” Fusing melodic guitar lines with gritty, distorted textures, this song grooves in a rich, minimalistic complexity.

The First One” is built around a mesmerising, descending electric guitar riff. The repetition of this part creates an almost trancelike state, drawing you into the music. The track’s thoughtful use of space and constraint with texture elicits tension and expectation as tones are carefully selected to build introspection. The closest comparison I can give to the feel of the music is Nicolas Jaar.

As “The First One” progresses, howling layers of guitar which sound like ebow add emotional depth. Percussion is used sparingly to punctuate the main groove, whilst synth provides a moody foundation in key areas. Eerie whistling is also used as an unexpected layer, which helps contrast with the darker tones of the track.

The highlight of the track is the gentle yet moody vocal delivery that radiates a personal and emotionally-charged vibe. The ethereal and immersive nature of the music is enhanced by the subtle vocal harmonies that give the music a sense of depth and richness. Like the descending guitar riff, the vocals guide the listener through the different sonic textures and moods, creating a cohesive listening experience.

Lyrically, “The First One” is about heartache and losing yourself and is characterised by its thoughtful use of space, dynamic contrasts, and textures. The track is truly an absorbing listening experience.
