Leezy - “The Dress”

Chicago-based Leezy has just released the haunting dream pop song “The Dress.” The song is moody, dark and mysterious, but it is the stunningly gorgeous vocals that will leave you enchanted.

The Dress” is built around a hypnotic, ascending piano melody. The tones of the piano are dreamy, but have a sense of distance and melancholy. Texture and tension are provided by muted electric guitar that punctuates the song’s groove. As the song progresses, a heartbeat is provided by a kick drum whilst synths gently heighten the ethereal nature of the track with meditative layers. As we enter the main section of the track, the addition of strings is a pleasant, elegant touch. Starting with brooding low cello, the strings gradually elevate the arrangement with rousing epic tones.

At the song’s crescendo, the full drum kit enters, allowing the dynamics to grow. The drums have a phaser effect, intensifying the dreamlike atmosphere as the sounds modulate and swirl. Leezy’s vocals on “The Dress” are simply sublime. The performance is vulnerable, breathy, and gorgeously expressive. The use of reverb also allows her delivery to gain a haunting feel, heightening the emotional impact of the lyrics. Rich backing vocal layers also effortlessly lift the performance over key areas, making the listening experience a true delight.

Leezy describes the meaning behind the track: “‘The Dress speaks to a question that has lingered in all of my relationships: will they love me less once they know me?” “The Dress” is a haunting listen. The track is meditative, sentimental, and emotionally charged, but it is the mesmerising vocal performance of Leezy that makes this track a true gem.
